Making your own vanilla extract is the easiest thing you will ever do and will enhance the flavor in all your baking needs. You only need 2 ingredients, a good quality alcohol (I used vodka) and vanilla beans. That's it!
RECIPE Homemade Vanilla Extract
Ingredients
Organic vodka
Vanilla bean pods, I used 14
Preparation
Start by taking your vanilla bean pods and cutting a slit down the middle of each bean pod with a sharp knife. This will help to open up the vanilla beans while they are sitting in the alcohol.
You will need about 2-3 vanilla beans per cup of alcohol. I used a whole liter which is a little over 4 cups of vodka. So I used 14 vanilla bean pods. You can adjust it to the amount of alcohol you are using.
Once you have cut a slit down the middle of the vanilla beans then just place them in the vodka, then let them infuse anywhere from 2-6 months. The longer they have been infused in the alcohol the better and stronger the vanilla extract will be. I do at least 2 months. Use anytime after that.
You can also put them in cute jars and give as gifts.
Tips
Use organic ingredients when feasible
The longer the vanilla beans are infused in the alcohol the better the vanilla extract will be.
They also make a great gift. You can transfer the extract to some cute jars after the infusion or at the beginning before you start the infusion process.
